Foot Fungus Q&A

Q&A: How do you cure toenail fungus?

Question by markkwalker: How do you cure toenail fungus?
My 5 year old has it on all of her toes and the prescription medication has bad side affects that could cause liver damage and stunt her growth I’m told. Is there a natural cure for toenail fungus?

oh g. Toenail fungus is difficult to get rid of without medication. Just get your kid the medication because if you don’t your kid can be stuck with fungus for many years to a point where they might have to remove the infected nail. I had fungus on my toe for two years and when I went to the doctors, he had to remove the nail. It was very painful. It was around $ 400 plus the prescription. Im not trying to scare you just warn you. Fungus medication has to be taken no more than six weeks. Give your kid a lot of water and feed him healthy meals and he should be fine. Take your kid to a different doctor to get a different opinion. I asked the doctor what I should do to avoid fungus, and he told me that sometimes wearing sandals in public places does not work. So I guess I just have to avoid public pools and showers.

Good luck. Visit another doctor.

P.S. Better to get this treated now so you won’t catch it as well.

Q&A: Is there a permanent toenail fungus cure?

Question by Kitbitird: Is there a permanent toenail fungus cure?
I have attempted to get rid of toenail fungus using various remedies: Penlac, TeaTree Oil, other nail fungal topical treatmnts. I have not tried the oral pills due to the doctor’s advice that they can damage liver, they are expensive and not 100% effective. The best remedy I have found is soaking my feet in vinegar daily, which works very well. Can anyone tell me what they have used and has worked? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by we todd did
If Penlac didnt work, and you really want it gone, the pills will have to be the way. Tell the Doc you really want it taken care of and put up with the liver tests (blood draws) for a few months. The problem is that it can come back in the future.
They have a daily pill and one that is taken the first week of every month. They are both rather expensive.

I believe my sister has a ringworm on her stomach near the belly botton area , is it possible that Lotrimin Ultra Athletes Foot can cure it ? And where could she have gotten it ?

Best answer:

Answer by Breezy
Hi,
Lotrimin anti fungal cream can treat ringworm; but if the ringworm comes back you may need to use another anti-fungal cream. When using the anti-fungal creams, use an antibacterial soap such as Dial Antibacterial Soap. Hope this helps; more on ringworm treatment http://examiner.com/health-in-riverside/what-are-the-causes-of-skin-fungus-skin-ringworm-tinea-corpora-treatment

To find prescription side effects “The Pill Book” is usually available near the pharmacy counter. The pharmacist might also give you a copy of the paperwork that would come with that tablet. Go to www.webmd.com for a search of prescriptions there also.

About the actual fungus, there was an article in the Sunday section of the Chicago Tribune on the 2nd or 9th of May. They told that Listerine applied to affected area daily can help in as little as 2-3 weeks. And that the pills may take several weeks or months because it works on the nail bed at cuticle where the nail growth begins.

Good luck. I just have one bad toe (on left foot also), while wet from shower, I keep the nail cut short and dab it several times a month with Hydrogen Peroxide. That works for me.

Treatment and Prevention

Because it is difficult to treat or eradicate toenail fungus, it is a good idea to try to prevent it. It helps to wear protective shoes or sandals in public showers, pool areas and gyms, and to avoid borrowing someone elses shoes or sharing socks or towels with someone who has toenail fungus. An orthotic device can be used to add cushioning and/or control over-pronation, support the longitudinal arch, and reduce stress on the lower leg muscles.

Wash your feet regularly, and dry them thoroughly when they get wet. Wearing nail polish on the toes is not advised because it can seal in fungus and allow it to grow. Keep toenails trimmed, and be sure to disinfect any pedicure tools before using them.

If you do develop toenail fungus, see your foot doctor. The doctor might remove as much of the nail as possible by trimming, filing or dissolving it. Medicated nail polish might be prescribed for a localized infection, but a serious infection will likely be treated with a prescription oral antifungal medication. These medications can have side effects, so be sure to work closely with your doctor on your treatment plan. Only in severe cases will surgical removal of the nail be recommended.

If you suspect that you have toenail fungus, see your foot doctor.
